My husband loves spicy food, and we had heard good things about Fairy Sichuan, so we headed downtown. This is located right in the downtown area, but there is a parking lot a few shops down, which made it easy to park the three times we have been (weekends).
Fairy Sichuan is small, but there was no shortage of seating. The menu has a lot of variety on it, as well as pictures to help us figure out what we wanted to order.
While many dishes are hot, there are dishes that aren't spicy. My very picky 9-year-old chose a tofu dish, and really enjoyed it.
We had spicy cucumber as an appetizer, and ordered it both times we returned. Very flavorful with just the right amount of kick to it.
My husband ordered a spicy hot pot. His entree came in a huge bowl, lathered in chili pepper. He can take a lot of spice and loved the dish.
I had a spicy vegetarian dish, which was just the right amount of spice.
We really enjoyed eating here and are looking forward to going back. -

I'm sorry. I tried to lay off. The people in the restaurant seemed so sweet BUT if this is Sichuan food I'm a 23 year old bullfighter from Pamplona.
We called for take out and not finding a menu on line I asked what they have. Hot Pot, fish hot pot.
Hot Pot? I say, We are taking it out.
Yes, Hot Pot. Take out.
But Hot Pot is where you eat at the table. Hot Pot, like soup?
Yes, take out.
We get there in the wonderful multi-ethnic area of Albany figuring we were in luck. There was no one there eating. Bad sign on a Friday night. They did have tables with elements for Hot Pot, a kind of communal meal where the restaurant comes with various things to add.
We get our bag of food. It doesn't quite feel heavy enough to have generous soup for three.
What we found when we got to our hotel was not Hot Pot. It wasn't soup. It was some kind of fish, almost a fish stick, deep fried in batter.
Hot Pot? Not. Good. Not. -

If you can't handle the heat don't order chili
The food was great but I was expecting an authentic hot pot like in China and I was disappointed that I didn't get that
Beyond that the food tasted great - I could handle heat but still struggled with their level of spicy -

I love Sichuan food but haven't had these good dishes for long time! -

I had the exquisite pleasure of having lunch with my brother on April 20th at Fairy Sichuan, a "hole in the wall' 42 seat storefront restaurant on Central Avenue in Albany. Some might say "authenticity" is in the eye of the beholder but, having enjoyed the handful of authentic Sichuan restaurants on Long Island, I can tell you that this is the "real deal".
If you cannot find street parking, use the small muni lot on the same block as we did. Bring quarters (25 cents an hour). Our pleasant server seated us promptly and patiently steered my diet conscious brother to a non-deep fried option, Chicken with Peanuts. No diet BS for me....I'm doing Smoked Bacon with Cabbage, a special listed on the bulletin board behind the rear checkout station. Sadly, the restaurant does not serve Wonton Soup, Egg Drop Soup, Hot & Sour Soup or Fried Rice. I chose Dumplings with Chili Oil as my starter. Be sure to ask for White Rice with your entree, which may carry a very small up-charge.
The Dumplings were superb!! The outside skin was well balanced between thick and thin. The Chili Oil was fabulously seasoned and not as hot as you would expect. These Dumplings were just about the best I ever had.
My Bacon & Cabbage was exceptional. The portion was HUGE, leaving me enough for dinner that day. The Cabbage was stir fried to a pleasant crunchy texture. More importantly, it had the characteristic "saltiness" which according to at least one noted author on the subject (Ken Hom), is the hallmark of great authentic Sichuan cuisine. Finally, my bro, who was an authentic Sichuan virgin, was deflowered by his Chicken with Peanuts, which he really enjoyed.
BOTTOM LINE:
Fairy Sichuan is the real deal. Go there.
